Bayh is a 2 term governor of Indiana and a popular senator. He has the executive experience and the legislative experience, plus he is on the right side of all the issues and is a fiscal conservative. Warner would make up for any "dullness" that Bayh might show and Warner is another extremely popular figure in a usually conservative state. Their nomination would open up Indiana and Virginia to take and if the Democrats held all of their states from 2004 and only gained Indiana and Virginia, they would win. I think this is going to be a great race and Bayh and Warner are both laying the groundwork to be the middle ground candidate like Clinton was in 1992. I am excited about the thought of a Bayh/Warner ticket, because that would surely beat any Republican ticket, especially since they won't nominate McCain or Guiliani.

Wetterling Out, Bell Upset and Klobuchar Jubilant

With Patty Wetterlings rapid departure from the US Senate race, everybody got what they wanted, except for Ford Bell, oh and Wetterling supporters. Bell, understandably was upset with the fact that he got no mention and that Klobuchar automatically made the rest of race between her and Kennedy. Personally, I think Bell is a better candidate and it is a shame he is being pushed over so lightly. Kennedy was alos probably excited because he got what he wanted, a matchup against Klobuchar. Even though the Zogby polls are flawed, Wetterlings trouncing of Kennedy was probably a little unnerving.

As for Wetterlings future, I really think and hope that she joins the sixth. Not only is the position of Lt. Governor unimportant (No offense Sheila) but it is not what Patty should be doing, she would be a much better congresswoman, especially because congresspeople can be a little less dynamic if the need. I personally want her to go to the 6th for my own reasons, the biggest being that if the Democrats can pick up the house (I think they would need to gain 15 seats) they can acutally start invesitgating Bush's many doings, something the Republican congress is afraid of doing. Patty would play a big role in that, winning a conservative district for the Democratic party.

Yes, it is true.

Sheila Kiscaden will become Doran's running mate and a candidate for Lt. Doran gets the best deal though, an admired and centrist legislature to compliment his centrist campaign, not to mention the female balance she will bring to the ticket. It will be intersting to see what the other candidates do for their Lt. Steve Kelly just got some media attention. NBC Nightly News ran a stroy today about the debate over the Iraq deathtoll counter in Kelley's offices. I can't say if this is good or bad publicity for Kelley, although, as the old saying goes, "Any publicity is good publicity." I liked the guys comments about the Duluth issue being akin to having a bar next to an AA center, "It just doesn't work."

Also, I was at the Joe Wilson speech at the Carpenters Unionin St. Paul in mid-December and let me take the liberty to say it was a very good speech. Mayor Chris Coleman made a short speech about taking the US House in 2006 and both Patty Wetterling and Becky Lourey were there. I also noticed a Amy Klobuchar button-wearing volunteer there. The speech was very motivating and frusterating at the same time. Too bad, when asked if Wilson would ever consider a political career, he did not rule it out, but is was as close to a no as one could get without saying it. All I can say is "Wilson for President". ..Ok maybe not, but what about Bayh or Biden or Warner or...

3 Political Things I Like:
"The Truth" By: Al Franken
"The Politics of Truth" By: Joe Wilson
The "West Wing" TV Show

Just viewed the new Patty Wetterling internet movie. It is very good, and like MDE said, I would be scared if I was Amy Klobuchar right now. I think the film was very well put together and may sway a large number of people if used well, however, I think the only detractor is the fact that the video focuses mostly on what Patty has done and not what she will do. I would have wanted to see more postions on a wider range of issues, but hey, it can't be perfect. The fact that for the Doran campaign being a "mess" and in a "meltdown" they still get the most media coverage of all the candidates, hardly a meltdown if you ask me. I haven't read nor heard one thing from Lourey or Kelley since Lourey's announcement, plus Lourey still doesn't have a website.

There has been a big uproar over Doran giving a minimal amount of money to republican candidates for a local office, which I might guess was a simple case of a friend helping a friend, but oh my God, you can't do that, not if it means crossing the aisle, because that is forbidden...give me a break. Also, MDE made a big "scoop" about the money given to Kerry and the DNC and others is from Maria Doran, but this is dumb in my opinion, simply because they probably share a bank account, like most married couples, and Maria just signed her name instead of Kelly, ok, once again...give me a break! I can't really say much other then I hope that their little preliminary website is not an indication of the things to come. http://www.beckylourey.org/ N/A

Mike Hatch on the other hand has a website, but it looks ten years old. It needs to be updated a little I think, the gray/blue and red aren't great either. Another question: Why does he have picures of his new puppies on his website for governor? Seems a little out of place to me, but oh well. His "issue stance" are really long and, in my opinion, overly detailed for the average person to want to read. He also has speeches from years ago, which I don't get because they have nothing to do with the governor's race. http://www.hatch2006.org/Default.htm C-

The second best website, in my opinion, is the Steve Kelley team's. It looks nice, it is easily accesible and has enough information. I would want a little more information on the other issues besides the seven he talks about. His website is the best at giving the people news about him with tons of resources like articles about the race and Kelley, there are even articles writtin by Kelley himself. One annoying point is the fact that one has to give the campaign personal information like phone number and e-mail just to view the pictures, I wonder what they will do with that information? The overall website is good, but there is a lack of information and a ton of extra's that aren't helpful to the average Minnesotan like "Contact Us" and other "fill out the form" type things. http://www.kelleyforminnesota.org/index.html B

So far, the best website belongs to Kelly Doran. The graphics are great, and the site is easily navigable. The picture gallery is amazing, easily usuable with great pictures and all. The so called "principles" are detailed, but not to an overbearing extent, not to mention there are lots of issues talked about, always a great way to reach many people. There are subtle things to have people volunteer and contribute, but not in your face marketing type things. The colors are fresh and different and the commercial linked to the site is great. It is pretty uniformed around the "more principles, less politics" slogan (Which I like) and the media page is filled. Overall, the best. http://www.kellydoran.com/ A

I Love This...

(Via Craiglist)
"Dear Red States..." It also looks like Hatch will pick up the Steelworkers Union, who also never interviewed all the candidates. This should help Hatch, along with his Nurses Union enodorsment, right out of the gate. All I have to say is, where was Doran on this one? He is fro up there, although I have a slight feeling that he may work his way into getting the support of the Iron range legislators, which would be interesting because it would put the most prominent union of the region behind one candidate and the elected officials behind another.

Well It's been awhile. I have been out of town and very busy. But it's time for an update on the gov's race. So far, Mike Hatch seems to be announcing, but as of now I am not impressed. His website is terrible. Anyway, I think Kelly Doran is shooting for the stars right now, but he might get there, he seems to running a strong campaign. He already has commercials out, cheesy, but good. Becky Loury should just keep to herself, I don't think her or Steve Kelley are going to do much. Steve has been in the race for 5 months and hasn't had nearly the effect of Hatch or even Doran. This Bud Philbrook will be interesting, we'll see how far he gets.

I have heard news that the Steelworkers Union has pretty much all but committed to Hatch, before he even announces. However, to counter this, I hear news from up north that many of the Iron Range delegation have pledged support to, you know who...Kelly Doran, the good old Duluth native. This could be interseting, with the regions largest Union supporting Hatch and the elected officials supporting Doran. Hmm...could turn out good for Doran or good for Hatch, but bad for Loury, Kelley, and Philbrook. It seems like Doran is running a tight ship and really wants this thing.

PS: Breaking News-MDE reports that Hatch will abide by the DFL endorsement.

As for the republicans, I could am not going to take as long, I promise.

1. George Allen?- Blah, I don't know enough about him.

2. Sam Brownback?- God, please, no! Although it would be funny only because I think he would be whipped.

3. Bill Frist?- Not for long, seems to be having sky fall all around him. There will never be a president Frist in my lifetime.

4. Mitt Romney?- Maybe he'll run...if he even wins re-election next year.

5. George Pataki?- He doens't seem popular enough or personable enough to win, I don't think he'll make it if h does.

6. Newt Gingrich?- Okay, maybe, but he's been out of the sptlight for awhile, not to mention he goes by "Newt". Case closed.

7. Mike Huckabee?- Another president from Arkansas? Let's hope not, although he is from hope...something I don't think he will have much of come 2007.

8. Tim Pawlenty?- Well, well, well. Good fuck, oops I mean luck Mr. Gov. Everyone in the republican party is enthralled with Pawlenty, which makes me want him to loose in 2006 even more. He made a tough draw being part of the rep. party next year. Not to mention, his popularity isn't that high.

9. Rudy Guiliani?- Everyone seems to like him, as do I. I just don't think he would make a good president, he did a great job on 9/11, don't get me wrong, but I don't think that qualifies him as a great presidential candidate, plus he seems lackadasical to me.

10. John McCain?- My first choice, I would vote for him. The problems is I think the republican party thinks they are so popular that they wouldn't dare anger their extreme conservative base by nominating this moderate. He would probably beat any democrat, but he probably won't get by his own party, which is disappointing, I wish that we could have just one election where both the candidates are good.

Yeah! The Golden Gophers beat the Michigan Wolverines to win the battle for the little brown jug. Gophers all they way.

In other news, this whole Miers thing strikes me as odd. It is interesting how all the conservatices doubt that this will turn out well for them. Normally this would make me happy, but I question how "moderate" Miers really is. I mean, she has been Bush's legal counsel for a number of years, they have probably had numerous conversatons about everything, it seems like he would now her positions, or at least most of them. This is what worries me, seeing how conservative Bush is, it bothers me that he would nominate someone who no one but him and a few others know aything about. For all we know she is a conservative stalwart who Bush knows all about, inlcuding positions on Roe v. Wade and the gay marriage issue. The other thing I don't really like is Dick Cheney's little reassurences, they make me feel like he knows how conservative she is, but he can't come out and tell all he conservatives to stay cool because that would alert the democrats. I am feeling a little gittery about the whole thing.

Bush really is a bad president afterall. I still think it is funny, the day after the 2004 election, many democrats at my school were furious. I thought it was a great opportunity for the rest of the country to see who we elected, a bid dumb oaf. According to the AP

By WILL LESTER, Associated Press Writer 10 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - Evangelicals, Republican women, Southerners and other critical groups in
President Bush political coalition are worried about the direction the nation is headed and disappointed with his performance, an AP-Ipsos poll found. That unease could be a troubling sign for a White House already struggling to keep the Republican Party base from slipping over Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers, Gulf Coast spending projects, immigration and other issues.
"Politically, this is very serious for the president," said James Thurber, a political scientist at American University. "If the base of his party has lost faith, that could spell trouble for his policy agenda and for the party generally."
Sentiment about the nation's direction has sunk to new depths at a time people are anxious about
at a time people are anxious about
Iraq, the economy, gas prices and the management of billions of dollars being spent for recovery from the nation's worst natural disaster.
Only 28 percent say the country is headed in the right direction while two-thirds, 66 percent, say it is on the wrong track, the poll found.
"There is a growing, deep-seated discontentment and pessimism about the direction of the country," said Republican strategist Tony Fabrizio, who believes the reasons for their pessimism differ for those in one political party or another.
Among those most likely to have lost confidence about the nation's direction over the past year are white evangelicals, down 30 percentage points since November, Republican women, down 28 points, Southerners, down 26 points, and suburban men, down 20 points.
Bush's supporters are uneasy about issues such as federal deficits, immigration and his latest nomination for the Supreme Court. Social conservatives are concerned about his choice of Miers, a relatively unknown lawyer who has most recently served as White House counsel.
"Bush is trying to get more support generally from the American public by seeming more moderate and showing he's a strong leader at the same time he has a rebellion within his own party," Thurber said. "The far right is starting to be very open about their claim that he's not a real conservative."
The president's job approval is mired at the lowest level of his presidency — 39 percent. While four of five Republicans say they approve of Bush's job performance — enthusiasm in that support has dipped over the last year.
In December 2004, soon after his re-election, almost two-thirds of Republicans strongly approved of the job done by Bush. The AP-Ipsos survey found that just half in his own party feel that way now.
The intensity of support for Bush's job performance has also dropped sharply among white evangelicals, Southerners, people from rural areas and suburban men.
"We've lost focus on where we're supposed to be going and not able to respond to the crises that affect the people of this country," said David Ernest, a Republican from San Ramon, Calif., who is angry about the government's response to Hurricane Katrina. "We're mired in a Middle Eastern adventure and we've taken the focus off of our own country."
Bush has tried to reassure conservatives about his Supreme Court nominee. He's also trying to counter critics of the war by tying U.S. efforts in Iraq to the larger war against terrorism. And he's made frequent trips to the areas devastated by hurricanes Katrina and Rita to offset criticism of the government's initial response to Katrina.
Of all the problems facing the country, the war in Iraq is the one that troubles some Bush supporters the most.
"I approve of what the president is doing, but it's a mixed decision," said Richard Saulinski, a Republican from Orland Park, Ill. Another Bush Insider, God help us. Well, I am not so thrilled, but it is common sense that with a republican in the White House, we have conservative nominees, although it is interesting because some conservatives aren't too happy about this. Like the hardcore guys, ohh well, they should just deal. At least its a woman right? She has no experience, but neither did Reinquist, so I'm ok with that, for now, but I reserve the right to get mad about it later. She seems to be active in other organizations though. Here is my preliminary list, and yes, I am biased, so I haven't looked so much at republican contenders, but I'll take a guess. MR=My Rating (1 to 10); WCP=Chance of Winning Primary (In my opinion, 1 to 10); WCG= Chance of Winning General (In my opinion, 1 to 10). (All ratings are relative to party, being a democrat, of course I like Hillary more than Brownback, but I may give Brownback a better rating because it is within own party; WCG is assumed that the candidate passed the primary)

DEMOCRATS

Hillary Clinton (Sen.-NY) - The obvious front-runner, she has yet to make any notion of whether she will run or not. Personally, I think she is a great leader, but I don't think she could win for the D'Crats, I think she is too polarizing and way too vulnerable. I don't think many men will vote for her and some female's might ditch her too. She is focusing all of her attention towards winning New York in 2006, and I think that is a great strategy. I think she could make the blue states bluer and turn the light blue ones red, which would be a problem. MR-6 WCP-9 WCG-5

Joe Biden (Sen.-DE) - I really like Biden's blunt manner, but that could be a detriment to a presidential candidate (Unfortunately), and I think his outbursts at the Robert's committee hearings put him in an even worse position. Being from a small, liberal, northeast state hasn't proved helpful in recent years, either. Biden may be the maverick candidate, and I would vote for him over Clinton, but I don't think Biden can make it to the general election, but if he does, watch out. He also has that sticky plagiarism issue. He is a strong candidate on foreign policy though. MR-9 WCP-5 WCG-7

Bill Richardson (Gov.-NM) - Richardson could prove to be a strong candidate, but I feel like only on paper. He is Hispanic, from a middle-of-the-road state and has the experience, but he doesn’t have great public speaking skills nor is he very charismatic on TV. He has also done some things in NM that were unpopular, like buying a "government" plane when poverty levels in the state are quite high. I think he would be a stronger VP pick then a presidential candidate.
MR-7
WCP-5
WCG-4

John Kerry (Sen.-MA) - People who read this blog should know one thing about me, I am a devout democrat, but I also really don’t like John Kerry. I think the guy is a weak candidate and ran a sloppy campaign. People know his stances and they rejected them, why go through it again, he lost, get over it, Al Gore did. He has the experience, but that doesn’t mean everything, you need charisma and compassion, and maybe I am being a little harsh, but I don’t think JK has much of either.
MR-3
WCP-4
WCG-2

Wesley Clark (Ret. Gen.) – I really like Clark, he has a cool last name for a president (Ahh…President Clark), but he ran and lost, end of story. He doesn’t have the amount of government experience that people generally look for in a presidential candidate. That is not to say he wouldn’t do well, I just don’t think he’ll run, but if he does, don’t hold your breath for a Clark administration.
MR-8
WCP-4
WCG-6

John Edwards (Fmr. Sen.-NC) – Unlike Kerry, I don’t think Edwards being on the loosing ticket, albeit at VP, will hurt as much. He wasn’t the candidate people were voting for/against, that being said, his greatest detriment will be his absence from the spotlight recently. If he wants to make an impact, he better start now. I also think people will reject because of his short federal experience, only one senate term.
MR-6
WCP-3
WCG-5

Russ Feingold (Sen.-WI) – I think Feingold is a great politician, he is smart and charismatic. But he angered party activities by voting for Roberts and has had some questionable loyalty troubles in the past. A second divorce might also hurt him, but not greatly. He seems like a viable candidate now, but will it last? He has shown all the right signs of a person who wants to run though.
MR-7
WCP-7
WCG-7

Evan Bayh (Sen.-IN) – I think, at the moment, Bayh is my favorite candidate so far. He seems charismatic, has the experience, and he is from a usually deep red state. He may break the Senate curse because he does have executive history as governor of Indiana. He has a clean slate and did very well in Indiana, good things for a presidential hopeful. He is portrayed as a moderate and could do well in the Midwest and possible northern south, if that isn’t an oxymoron.
MR-9
WCP-8
WCG-8

Mark Warner (Gov.-VA) – Another candidate I like is Warner, who has the executive experience of running a normally conservative state. The problem is that his term expires in 2006 and if he doesn’t run for something, anything, he will be either lost in two years of he will start campaigning, even if only within the party, almost immediately after leaving office. He is very well liked in Virginia, but he has limited experience besides his one term as governor.
MR-8
WCP-8
WCP-7

Tom Vilsack (Gov.-IA) – If he runs he might have an advantage in that the straw poll is in Iowa and he could show strongly there, maybe pushing him to further victories. Executive experience helps on this one, but he doesn’t have much name recognition, and he comes from a small state, which can flip at a moments notice. I like his chances, but not against the likes of similar, but stronger candidates like Warner, Bayh or even Edwards.
MR-6
WCP-5
WCG-6

Other, of whom I have nothing to say about except that I doubt they’ll run or if they do they won’t get far: Barack Obama; Barbara Boxer; Mike Easley; Elliot Spitzer; Al Sharpton, Al Gore, Ed Rendell

Check Back for the Republicans

Rebecca Yanisch for governor?

I haveheard murmurings of a possible run for governor by Rebecca Yanisch who previously ran for senate in 2000. I think it is interesting that they side her Klobuchar and not Patty, who has been a vocal advocate of some strong issues, but maybe they have a double motive. Everyone would be happy for her because we could pick up a congressional seat (In a conservative district, no less), but I think this would be at a loss of the a senate seat. Kennedy, no matter how much I may dislike him, is going to run a strong race and he will be well funded because republicans are going to eye this seat as a possible pick-up. On the other hand, I would rather not put Amy Klobuchar up against him, I don't think she is a strong candidate, yet it seems like there is no getting around her, at least until Cerisi jumps in (PLEASE, Mike).

As for the governors race, well it's still pretty boring, Steve Kelley hasn't really made a big impretion, which may explain Kelly Doran's jumping ship and most likely running Kelley to the ground. Pawlenty still looms large, but also weakened, especially by the national party events right now (Katrina Screw Up, Bush, Delay). If anyone cares, MN Left Liberal has been bashing Doran, and for no real cuase as of yet, but Hatch may or may not jump in. Anyway, I will make it special. It has come to my
attention that MDE correctly called Kelly Doran dropping out of the US Senate
race and then joining the MN Governor race.

Associated Price
WASHINGTON - Kelly Doran is dropping out of the Minnesota Senate race to run for governor, a
high-ranking Democrat told The Associated Press on Tuesday. Doran, a Democrat, planned a
news conference in St. Paul on Wednesday. The campaign would only say that Doran planned "an announcement regarding the future of his campaign for Minnesota." Campaign spokeswoman Tonya Tennessen declined to comment Tuesday.

I think Klobuchar got lucky on this. I hate to say I'm bias, but everyone is. Doran was making big waves in the race, and it was still early. It looks like Kelley just got some bad news. Doran had his reasons for quitting the race, however, he made it clear that he did not want to miss out on such a bid part of his kids life while he was in Washington, if he won.
